Floor Hockey Season

The 2014/2015 Season was FANTASTIC. The athletes and coaches worked extremely hard to improve on minor inadequacies we picked up on at last season’s Provincial Qualifier in London. As we prepare ourselves for the next Qualifier I am so gratified with all my athletes for their dedication and hard work throughout this season, as it has completely paid off! We travelled to Stratford in February in some heavy snow but were thankful that everyone made it safe. We were a bit late so the athletes had to rush to change and take the floor. Our first game started out very close but unfortunately we just couldn’t hold on for the win. We took a quick break for lunch and re grouped as a team to discuss any issues we had seen and how we could correct them. Well it paid off because it was the best games I had ever seen the athletes compete in. It was quite the thrill to come out with a 1st place ribbon, CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! To finish the year we travelled to our second tournament in London on April 25th , this time with Sunny Blue Skies and 60 Degree weather. Once again the athletes worked extremely hard playing against teams who qualified for the provincials in the 2014 tournament. This was an excellent trip to see where we stand for the next qualifier and what we may still need to improve on. All in all they still walked away with a medal and I couldn’t have been more proud. I am forever thankful to work with each and every one of these athletes for the last 4+ years and every year I see us growing more and more as a team. Thank you to everyone for a WONDERFUL Season I look forward to many more! Go SPIRIT!

LWSO Swimming

On Sunday, March 8, the LaSalle Windsor Special Olympics Community Council in association with the Windsor Aquatic Club hosted the Robert Zimmerman Provincial Qualifier Swim Meet at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre. This meet was attended by over 100 athletes from 9 communities in Southwestern Ontario including our own local athletes.

This event was a great success and saw many personal best times from the athletes. The smiles on the athlete’s faces were evident throughout the day as they swam, hung out with their teammates and had an opportunity to meet other athletes from around the region! Everyone enjoyed the tasty pasta, salad and rolls served at lunch.

The meet was made possible through the generous donations from the Royal Canadian Legion Ambassador Branch 143 and Dominic Bruzzese, The Earnest Bagel Company, Silverstein’s Produce and Windsor Regional Hospital. This event was also well supported through Jen Potma, our Meet Manager, the Windsor Aquatic Club officials, community volunteers and LWSO athletes and coaches who helped to ensure that the day ran smoothly. Thanks go out to these organizations and individuals for all your support.

Basketball Tournament -- St. Thomas -- Southwood Team

On a snowy Valentine's Day, Saturday February 14th the Southwood Basketball team headed out for a tournament in St. Thomas. There were only 3 teams including us: Woodstock and St. Thomas.

Our first game was against Woodstock which we won in overtime. Jenny P. and Erik L. were the leading scorers in this game with each making 3 baskets, Erik scoring 2 of them in overtime; Matt C. and Dan M. each scored a pair of baskets with Matt scoring 1 in overtime plus making a foul shot; Paul M. also scored a basket. After this game Jenny was presented with a water bottle for being MVP.

We then went on to play St. Thomas. This was a tougher team whom we lost to but the team made a good effort scoring many baskets while trying to hold them off. The leading scorer in this game was Tom W. making 2 baskets; Matt C., Wyatt W., Jenny P., and Erik L. were all able to snag a basket each. Matt C. was awarded a water bottle for being MVP of this game.

We then had a lunch break where we were served pizza and chili compliments of Wendy's which was absolutely delicious.

The 3rd and final game was a playoff against St. Thomas which we again lost but the team played hard. Erik was the leading scorer with 3 baskets followed by Matt with 2 and Dan and Mitch each scoring a basket.

Throughout all 3 games great assists and rebounds were made by Chris P., Ronnie O., Jared P., Charlie J. and Sam B.

This was a good tournament for the newly formed team to play together and work on their skills.

At the end of the tournament the team was presented with t-shirts and thanked for once again attending their tournament in such snowy conditions and the team responded by thanking St. Thomas for hosting the tournament.

After driving through very snowy conditions and even white-outs the team made it home safely.

Thanks go out to Terry J. for driving the 2nd van and to coaches Sean B., Jim H., James C., Eric W. and Jim M. for all your help.

Way to go Team Southwood

Floor Hockey Tournament --Stratford

The floor hockey tournament in Stratford was a small one this time. With only 3 teams including us competing, the organizers were extremely happy when we arrived at 9:35am. A little late as it snowed the whole way there and we got stuck behind a snow plow when we were almost there.

We played 2 games one after the other and then it was lunch. After lunch, the organizers had picked 3 athletes from each team to compete in a 5 shot shoot out on different goalies. You did not shoot on your own goalie. When the dust settled, Rene B our goalie came in 2nd in saves and all 3 of our shooters, Ronnie O, Jordan Mc and Wyatt W all received a 1st for getting the most goals.

After the shootout, we played in a knock out round and survived the first against Stratford 8 - 1 and then also downing Guelph 5-4 to win the tournament.

We were also able to get home in good time and beat the fog that arrived with the sun going down.

Tillsonburg basketball tournament Team Sandwich West

Game 3 of this tournament was one of the most exciting moments in the more than 45 years of my involvement with sports, especially game 3 when with a buzzer beater shot by Max that sent us into overtime and then his 2 free throws with 2 seconds left that sent us to the next overtime and finally Instead of a 5th overtime the officials called for a free throw shootout and when Lenny scored the deciding bucket the whole place erupted in the loudest cheer. The fans appreciation was for both teams that had given their all. This win sent us to the gold medal game where even though we lost Our defence was outstanding holding a strong St. Thomas team to just 12 points after they had been crushing the opponents all day. Congrats to our players for taking all what coach Frank had been teaching for weeks and putting into action, you should be proud of yourselves, your are truly TEAM players!

Coach Mark

Our team went to Tillsonburg for a tournament on February 28th. We definitely showed up to play. We won our first 2 games which tied us with St Thomas for first place. Unfortunately, St Thomas had accumulated almost 80 points in their 2 games and we had won by about 30. We played our semi-final game against Cambridge. This game ended in a tie. The first overtime resulted in a tie. The second overtime ended with max sinking a long shot to put into a third over time. With 4 second left in the 3rd overtime and down by 2 points, Max got fouled and made both foul shots. The crowd went crazy. After a 4th overtime the score was still tied. It was decided that we would go to best of 5 free throws. Lenny and Ruth made their shots winning this game. We now had St Thomas who had severely beaten all the teams thus far. After the first half, the score was 4-2 for St Thomas. It appeared that they were going to win at any expense. Being down by 6 points with 2 minutes, the coaches decided that we were going to ensure that everyone played and they kept their strongest players on the court. When it was all set and done they were only able to put 12 points on the board. We walked away with a well deserved Silver and the respect of everyone watching. All our players played and they worked their hearts out. It is great to see all the hard work put in by the coaches put in week after week and see your athletes playing just as we had hoped they would.
